Speaking with Chuck Todd on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” former Democratic Virginia senator, Jim Webb openly stated that the Democratic Party has moved “very far to the left.”
The former Marine also said the Party’s shift towards “identity politics” has seen the Democrats lose a “key part of their base.”
When asked by Todd to clarify his previous thoughts on whether he believes President Trump was the “shock the system needed,” Webb admitted that Trump provides a necessary rejuvenation.
“I’ve been saying for a long time that the system we’re operating under needs some sort of…, you would call it, jolt,” Webb said. “I think both parties have, sort of, gotten calcified.”

Webb also told Todd that today’s Democrats are not the same Party for which he or his ancestors grew up voting.
“My family history goes back to the Roosevelt Democrats, the people who believed that regardless of any of these identity segments, you need to have a voice in the quarters of power for those who have no voice. And, we’ve lost that with the Democratic Party.”
