The war on cops has escalated, with a total of four attacks across the nation Sunday, including the shooting of a St. Louis police officer as he was simply sitting in his cruiser waiting to drive through an intersection in slow traffic.

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said the officer is a sergeant and 20-year veteran of the department and is now in the hospital in critical condition after being shot twice in the face.  He was able to call for help after being shot, and was able to give details of the attack.

The sergeant remembers that a silver car pulled up next to his police vehicle.  He first thought the person in the other vehicle wanted to ask him a question.   Instead, someone pointed a gun at his face.  He remembers seeing a muzzle flash and remembers feeling the glass of his car window shatter. Chief Dotson said the officer was not involved in a traffic stop and was not trying to pull anyone over.  He was just ambushed while driving down the road.

The injured officer’s identity has not yet been released, but Chief Dotson said he is 46 years old, married with three children.  He is expected to survive.

All St. Louis police have been ordered to double up, with two officers per car, following the incident, reported KSDK News.

The attack happened at the intersection of Hampton and Pernod a little before 7:30 pm Sunday evening.  Police are going through surveillance video from nearby businesses searching for clues about the suspect.

In other attacks Sunday, a San Antonio police detective was shot in the head and killed shortly after noon, as he sat in his vehicle writing a traffic citation.

Also Sunday night, around 8:00 pm, a police officer in Sanibel, Florida was shot in a drive-by shooting as he sat in his patrol vehicle, following a routine traffic stop. He was treated at the hospital and released, and the suspect was captured.

A fourth cop shooting occurred Sunday night about 10:30 pm in Gladstone, Missouri, where an officer was shot while conducting a traffic stop in the north Kansas City suburb.  The suspect was reportedly shot also, and the officer is expected to survive.   KCTV5 reported that the suspect was killed at the scene.
