The Tulane University campus in New Orleans erupted in outrage after members of the Kappa Alpha fraternity built a wall with sandbags in front of their house, and spray-painted the words “Make America Great Again” and “Trump” on the wall.
It’s part of an annual tradition, to build a wall around the house each spring, ahead of the school’s “Old South” formal ball.
But this one wasn’t embraced so well. Students were in an uproar, saying the wall was filled with hate and ignorance.
Unidentified individuals, reported to be Tulane football players, descended on the property and tore the wall down, tossing the sandbags out into the street, disregarding the frat boys’ protest that this was private property. (See video below).
Students took their outrage to facebook:
University spokesman Mike Strecker told The Times-Picayune that leadership in the local chapter said members used Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s name and slogan on this year’s wall as satire. (No evidence that fraternity who built it ever said it was satire.)
On Wednesday, the university addressed the incident in a statement, saying that while it encourages the ‘free exchange of ideas and opinions’, the local chapter’s actions ‘sparked a visceral reaction in the context of a very heated and divisive political season,’ The Times-Picayune reported.
In an effort to support the individuals who dismantled the fraternity’s ‘Trump wall’, Tulane’s Latino student advocacy group, Generating Excellence Now and Tomorrow in Education (GENTE), set up a Change.org petition against the university’s administration.
‘We the undersigned stand in solidarity with the individuals who took the brave action of dismantling the wall in front of Kappa Alpha Fraternity House,’ a statement on the petition read.
STATEMENT FROM KAPPA ALPHA ORDER’S NATIONAL CHAPTER
“Our chapter takes KA’s values of gentlemanly conduct very seriously,” said Jesse Lyons, Assistant Executive Director for Advancement. “‘This respect extends to every student of Tulane and every member of the broader community. The comment was written on a makeshift wall on our private property, normally used for a game of capture the flag, to mock the ideologies of a political candidate. This had a unintended negative effect and as such it has been dismantled.”
At a “town hall” event in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Wednesday, Donald Trump vowed that his proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border would be completed within two years, a claim that had the crowd chanting “Build the wall! Build the wall!”
