Frat member accused of raping a student at a party

FLORIDA — A fraternity member at the University of Central Florida (UCF) has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a “New Years in July” party.

Alexander Garces, 22, a member of Alpha Tau Omega, was taken into custody Monday on charges of sexual battery and false imprisonment. Police are also investigating a second suspect.

UCF police say the incident took place at a party held at the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house last month.

The victim told detectives that she went with Garces and another man to a bedroom in the house because she felt very comfortable with Garces, having known him previously.

She says Garces forced her to perform a sex act on him and then left the room, leaving her with the other man. The other man then allegedly raped the victim and put his hands around her throat and mouth to stop the screaming.

Garces is being held without bail. Jail records do not list an attorney.
