Gen. Mattis is working with Amazon on new initiative

U.S. Secretary of Defense Gen. James Mattis toured Amazon’s headquarters in Seattle on Thursday, marking his first stop on a two-day outreach campaign. The campaign aims to highlight the Pentagon’s commitment to tech innovation, according to Reuters.

The e-commerce giant’s Chief Executive, Jeff Bezos, met with Mattis, according to a Twitter post by Bezos. He wrote: “A pleasure to host #SecDef James Mattis at Amazon HQ in Seattle today.”

Amazon saw its stock reach $1,000 for the first time in March 2017, placing their market value at approximately $478 billion. Though they’ve experienced a slight dip, the stock is still trading above $900.

As the online retailer seeks to break into other markets, such as groceries and healthcare, its potential seems limitless. Still, the Trump administration has had disagreements with Amazon on a host of issues, including immigration, privacy and net neutrality.

President Trump himself has accused Bezos of using The Washington Post, which Bezos owns, to skirt internet taxes.

On June 28, the president tweeted:“The #AmazonWashingtonPost, sometimes referred to as the guardian of Amazon not paying internet taxes (which they should) is FAKE NEWS!

On July 25, President Trump hit The Post again in a three-part tweet, writing:

“The Amazon Washington Post fabricated the facts on my ending massive, dangerous, and wasteful payments to Syrian rebels fighting Assad…..”

“So many stories about me in the @washingtonpost are Fake News. They are as bad as ratings challenged @CNN. Lobbyist for Amazon and taxes?”

“Is Fake News Washington Post being used as a lobbyist weapon against Congress to keep Politicians from looking into Amazon no-tax monopoly?”

On Tuesday, the president issued another criticism of The Post, tweeting: “E-mails show that the AmazonWashingtonPost and the FailingNewYorkTimes were reluctant to cover the Clinton/Lynch secret meeting in plane.”

After completing his tour of Amazon, Mattis, who recently warned North Korea against it’s nuclear ambitions, is reportedly scheduled to visit Mountain View, California, to tour the Pentagon’s Defense Innovation Experimental Unit Thursday. On Friday, he’ll be at Alphabet’s Google headquarters in Palo Alto.
