Billionaire activist George Soros, 86, is facing a $10 billion lawsuit after using his money to persuade the government of Guinea to keep an Israeli company, BSG Resources, from getting an iron ore mining contract in the West African country.
According to a spokesman for Soros, his “lifelong interest in helping impoverished nations” lead him to act out of “corruption concerns,” but it looks like business-as-usual for the man who is regularly accused of creating political upheaval in order to advance a personal agenda. He often masquerades as a humanitarian while his real purpose is to change the political landscape, Fox News reports.
“We are committed to use all legal means at our disposal to stop pseudo-civil society spy groups such as the ones funded by George Soros,” said Hungary’s top education official, Minister of Human Capacities Zoltan Balog. Soros was born in Hungary.
In the U.S., Soros has used his vast financial empire to affect politics from the local level to even the presidency. A well-known supporter of the Democratic Party, Soros’ stated goals include reshaping the justice system, achieving income equality, battling climate change and fighting racism.
Through his Open Society Foundation and U.S. diplomatic connections, Soros has been accused of trying to interfere with the government of Macedonia, according to Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah.
He was convicted in France in 2002 of insider trading after investing in companies which were previously owned by the government, including the bank Société Générale.
In the BSG case, the Israeli company intends to point to Soros’ influence on the U.S. government, in particular the Obama administration, as evidence that Soros uses his political connections to further his goals.
“We are appalled that a person can manipulate the Department of Justice, which is funded by U.S. taxpayers,” Dag Cramer, director of BSG Resources, told Fox News. “I know there are political overtones, but it doesn’t seem right that Soros would be directing the policy of the DOJ—I’d like to think that such things would not happen under the Trump administration.”
According to former Obama administration DOJ attorney J. Christian Adams, “Soros’ organizations in the U.S. were instrumental in shaping DOJ policy under the Obama administration,” Adams said, pointing to allegations that Soros was involved in police procedures and voter ID rules across the country. “Americans do not understand the extent to which Soros fuels this anti-constitutional, anti-American agenda.”
