Former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) opined in a Sunday interview that President Trump’s decision to strike a Syrian airbase on Thursday in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack earlier in the week had a big effect on Russia and China.

“I think that was a substantial shock to Putin and to the Russians,” Gingrich told John Catsimatidis on 970 AM in New York, adding, “It also reminded people just who the most powerful country in the world is and the fact is that it’s not Russia. We’re vastly more powerful than the Russians are.”

Gingrich said that he believes the Chinese were also disturbed by Trump’s move to strike Syria.

“I think the Chinese were very shaken. I think they’ve never seen anything quite like that,” Gingrich said, pointing out that Trump was hosting Chinese President Xi JinPing at his private Mar-a-lago estate on the night the strikes were ordered and carried out.
