Rebecca Kimberly (right side in photo) disappeared off the west coast of Florida in a boat with her two brothers Roger, 13, and Donny, 15, and dad Ace, 45, on Sunday. They were last seen in Sarasota before heading south for Fort Myers, where they were planning to do repairs on the vessel they had lived on for a year.
After finding empty kayaks and a debris field in the Gulf of Mexico during the search on Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard found Rebecca, floating in the water with a life jacket on. The finding of her body came after six life vests and a tarp were recovered in a search of the area.
Captain Gregory Case of the Coast Guard said a search helicopter found the girl at about 4.30pm and turned it over to local authorities for positive identification.
‘We still have three persons out there that we are trying desperately to locate and we still have hope for that,’ Case told reporters.
Case said the vessel ran into a storm with 6-foot seas on Sunday off Englewood, a community about 30 miles south of Sarasota.
