Performing in the Ozark town of Branson, Missouri, country music singer Neal McCoy premiered a new patriotic song earlier this month that has skyrocketed to “viral” status on social media.
McCoy has made it clear he is fed up with the NFL players who have been kneeling in protest during the playing of the national anthem. On his Twitter page, he wrote in September, “I believe I’ll just focus on music instead of watching football this season.”
On stage during his show in Branson, McCoy told the audience that he was about to premier a song he’d never recorded before, which was written by a friend of his. He warned the audience that the song “has a bad word in it.”
Typical of Branson music shows, he blends in a bit of humor as he explains to the audience what he’s about to sing.
“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America,” he begins. “I’ll stand and place my hand upon my heart every time the anthem plays.”
“When I see somebody on TV take their stand on bended knee, whether it be on astro turf or grass,” McCoy sings. “I think of those whose freedom was not free, and I say: ‘Take a knee – my ass!’”
“Thank God I live in the home of the brave and the land of the free… I’ll honor the ones who gave it all,” he sings, as the audience all stands in unison.

In an interview with NBC4, McCoy said, “I’ve been on 15 USO tours. I’ve entertained our troops in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq and all over the world. So, no, this is not a money grab. This is a guy that believes in our country, that does not like people kneeling, not standing with their hands over their hearts, for the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem. That’s what I’m about.”
Regarding former NFL star Colin Kaepernick being recognized as “Citizen of the Year” by the GQ magazine, McCoy said, “If you haven’t seen it they named their GQ ‘Citizen of the Year’ for 2017, Colin Kaepernick. Now, I didn’t read the article, I saw it when I was driving, I understand they’re probably going to say he’s done a lot for Civil Rights and everything, and maybe he has. Maybe whatever he was trying to do, with civil unrest, maybe African Americans being treated wrong, or not equally, and some of that’s right. Maybe that’s what he was trying to do. But, taking a knee during the National Anthem at a professional NFL game is not the way to do it.”
