Appearing as a guest on Fox News Monday, Republican Congressman Louie Gohmert (Texas) said Arizona should do everyone a favor and recall Sen. John McCain, allowing him to move on to fighting his recent brain cancer diagnosis.
McCain has vowed to vote against the GOP’s latest effort to repeal ObamaCare, saying he cannot support the “Graham-Cassidy” bill.
It has been noted that McCain actually campaigned on the promise that he would get ObamaCare repealed. But now, for the second time, he is preventing that very thing from taking place.
Gohmert made it clear that he felt McCain should have never been re-elected the last time, and that others running against him would have upheld the promise to repeal ObamaCare.
“I was out there in Arizona last year, and, frankly, I think Dr. Kelli Ward would have won, but, of course, the president came out and endorsed John McCain,” Gohmert said.
“If [McCain] had said last year what he was going to do, Kelli Ward would have beat him, Ann Kirkpatrick would have beat him,” he added.
“But you know, nothing inhibits recovery from cancer like stress. I think Arizona could help him, and us. Recall him, let him fight successfully this terrible cancer, and let’s get someone in here who will keep the word he gave last year,” Gohmert appealed.
“I think it would be very helpful to him and the country. He’s got cancer, it’s a tough battle. But stress is a real inhibitor toward getting over cancer,” Gohmert continued. “So, let him go back, deal with the cancer. Let Arizona recall him so that we can get somebody who will keep his word from last year.”
“I cannot in good conscience vote for the Graham-Cassidy proposal,” McCain said in a statement last week. “I would consider supporting legislation similar to that offered by my friends, Senators Graham and Cassidy, were it part of extensive hearings, debate, and amendment. But that has not been the case.”
It has been noted that what Gohmert has suggested cannot actually happen:
As per a Congressional Research Service report, “the United States Constitution does not provide for nor authorize the recall of United States officers such as Senators, Representatives, or the President or Vice President.” They can be expelled by their colleagues, but not recalled by voters.
