Earlier this afternoon, DML News published a story stating nearly 700,000 DACA recipients would soon lose the privilege of remaining in the United States without fear of deportation, as well as losing the ability to secure a work permit and a license to drive. But as fast as you can blink an eye, here comes the GOP to save the day and pave the way for amnesty.
According to NumbersUSA, a group out of D.C. that lobbies for the reduction of immigration levels, Rep. Dave Brat (R-Va.) and Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) claim Republican lawmakers are finalizing an immigration bill that would grant amnesty for so-called Dreamers in exchange for tighter controls on immigration and enforcement.
NumbersUSA reports that Brat said the GOP is looking at a plan that would include ending chain migration, eliminating the diversity visa lottery, and making E-Verify for employers mandatory.
Brat says if Republicans can get Democrats to agree to those three bullet points, the GOP would surrender in the fight against amnesty for the 700K Dreamers, who in many cases are in their late 20s.
“The numbers from those three pieces I just mentioned clearly outweigh the DACA — by a lot,” Rep. Brat said. “And so, you’re just saying, ‘OK, we can deal with 700,000 here [in DACA] because we’re getting a reduction in millions here.’”
Representative McCaul would not verify any of the details surrounding the plan, saying, “I’ve been sworn to secrecy.” But he did confirm that they were nearing the end of negotiations.
McCaul also said that Republicans are looking at a stand-alone immigration bill instead of attaching it to the upcoming spending bill. “I think the preference is not to have it attached to an omnibus,” he said.
President Trump has asked for the DACA fix not to be included in the spending bill. However, a group of 25 Democrats has said they will oppose any spending bill that doesn’t include a clean amnesty for Dreamers.
What baffles me in all of this is how the GOP thinks the Democrats will agree to any of these three provisions.
Although the Democrats would pick up 700K potential voters, they would lose millions of voters in the long term with the elimination of chain migration. They’ll never say yes to such a thing.
As for mandatory E-Verify, they will claim discrimination will play a big role in who gets a background check and who does not.
As for the diversity visa, I can see the Democrats agreeing to that deal because it’s so blatantly dangerous to keep it in place. Thus, don’t be shocked if it turns out to be a one for one deal: amnesty granted to 700K illegal aliens in exchange for 50K visas per year. Yes, the GOP will lose out, and so shall you. But, isn’t that the norm at this point?
