GOP McConnell pushes for Obama favorite to be FBI Director

With a vacancy left at the FBI after President Trump fired Director James Comey last week,  numerous names have been mentioned as “the perfect person” to fill Comey’s job.  Recent reports indicate that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is already interviewing candidates. However, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is said to support the nomination of an unlikely name. McConnell is suggesting Judge Merrick Garland.

Judge Garland, who was nominated to be the next Supreme Court justice under former president Barack Hussein Obama in 2016, was never granted a senate hearing because McConnell declined to hold one. The move angered Democrats, who didn’t agree with McConnell that it was best to wait for a new president to nominate the seat vacated by Justice Antonin Scalia.

Former adviser, Josh Holmes, told “Fox News Sunday” that McConnell thinks it wold be “a fantastic idea” for Judge Garland to be the next Director of the FBI. Holmes reportedly said, “He certainly thinks (Garland) will be qualified. And (McConnell) certainly thinks he would be somebody that he could support.”

Originally, Garland’s name was posed by Republican Sen. Mike Lee (UT). Following  former Director Comey’s firing, Lee explained his thoughts about the replacement on “Fox News Sunday.”

“I think Merrick Garland would be a particularly good option, given that he would have so much support from both sides of the aisle.  I’m absolutely serious about this,” Lee said, recalling that Garland was involved in key elements of the investigation and prosecution of the Oklahoma City bombers.

Lee also said he didn’t know if Garland is even under consideration.

Trump is reported to have a “short list” of about a dozen potential candidates, and he may announce a replacement by the end of the week. Attorney General Jeff Session and his deputy, Rod Rosenstein, were conducting interviews Saturday at DOJ headquarters.

Anyone nominated to the position will have to go through the Senate confirmation process.
