GOP Senator voices frustration over Trump’s tweets

Written by DML
“I just don’t for the life of me understand why the president wants to engage in that kind of activity. It’s a distraction. It distracts from the president’s agenda.” Those are the words used by Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) when describing President Trump’s tweets targeted at the media.

Senator Toomey made the comments on Wednesday night during a televised Q & A.  He added, “It distracts from what we’re trying to do in the Senate… It’s not helpful.”

Toomey’s comments were in response to President Trump’s recent tweets about the media, including the highly controversial tweet known as the “body slam of CNN.”

Toomey said he’s pleading with Trump to place his focus on getting the administration’s agenda implemented, and to forget about the media.

The comments from Toomey come as no shock to me.  Over the weekend I wrote an op-ed explaining why the president’s tweets will hurt his ability to get laws passed.  Although many of Trump’s supporters love the tweets, it’s the voters who don’t love his use of Twitter that concern lawmakers like Toomey.

In all fairness to President Trump, Sen. Toomey was never a supporter.  He distanced himself from Trump as much as possible during election season.  In fact, Toomey didn’t announce until Election Day that he would vote for Trump.

I hear it everyday, Trump supporters will point to a guy like Toomey and say, “he never liked or supported Trump.  He’s the swamp.”  Maybe so, but Toomey is a needed ally right now.  Push him away too far and Trump’s agenda will never get through.  The president has to realize this as the weeks move forward.  For example, during the TV interview, Toomey described Trump’s presidency as “mixed.”  Toomey said, “I think there have been developments that have been disappointing.”  Trump needs to meet with Toomey and explain why he tweets what he does, and assure the senator that his focus is on making America great again.

It won’t be easy to do.  Toomey was one of several GOP senators who publicly criticized Trump for his personal attacks of Mika Brzezinski, a co-host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” which took place on Twitter last week.
