New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s temper was triggered by a caller during his audition for a drive-time radio hosting job on WFAN on Monday.
Responding to “beachgate” allegations after Christie and his family were pictured spending the Fourth of July weekend in one of New Jersey’s state parks closed to the public because of a government shutdown, Christie went on the attack the moment he heard the words “fat ass”.
Christie got testy when “Mike from Montclair” called in to the show and suggested, “Governor, the next time you want to sit on a beach that is closed to the entire world except you, you put your fat ass in a car and go to one that is open to all your constituents, not just you and yours.”
The government shutdown had been ordered by Christie on Saturday after a budget standoff with the state’s Democratic speaker of the Assembly.
The Christie family stayed at the state-owned governor’s residence in Island Beach State Park, where they and their guests were treated to the luxury of having the ten-mile barrier island all to themselves during the holiday. The Fourth of July is a notoriously busy holiday at the Jersey Shore, because it basically kicks off the summer season. That particular park would usually be jam-packed with tourists .
NJ Advance Media published photos of the governor relaxing on the beach with his family, which were taken early on Sunday afternoon, to the public’s outrage. In response, the Twitterverse is having a hilariously good time at Christie’s expense.

On WFAN, Christie was filling in for soon-to-be-retired sports radio host Mike Francesa as he apparently seeks a new job after leaves office in January. But it’s unclear if he’ll get the hosting position after his nasty response to “Mike”.
“You know Mike, I love getting calls from Communists in Montclair,” was Christie’s swift response.
“You’re a bully,” the caller replied. “And I don’t like bullies.”
Christie referenced the “fat ass” remark in his retort: “Listen, I’m not the guy who came on the air, swore on the air … You’re swearing on the air, Mike. You’re a bum…What matters is what you do.”
“What have you done?” Mike asked.
“What I just did is stop polluting the airwaves with a guy like that,” Christie announced as he ended the call.
Another caller from Montclair referenced Christie’s low approval rating, which is currently at 15 percent, according to a new poll from the Monmouth University Polling Institute.
“You lost twice, John,” Christie said, referring to his pair of statewide victories. “So that shows how much you matter.”
Christie commented to his co-host, Evan Roberts, that people from Montclair are “not his fans.”
