Washington Governor Jay Inslee signed an executive order that restricts state agencies from enforcing President Donald Trump’s immigration laws.
The recent move comes after many Democratic leaders have spoken out against Trump’s handling of illegal immigrants.
“This executive order makes clear that Washington will not be a willing participant in promoting or carrying out mean-spirited policies that break up families and compromise our national security and, importantly, our community safety,” Inslee said.
According to the Seattle Times, Inslee said the order will honor federal law and “if there is a federal criminal arrest warrant, we will honor it.”
The order will ultimately take away resources that aid deportations. Inslee said he does not want illegal immigration to be the main focus of state workers. He recently supported a federal judge’s decision to block enforcement of Trump’s travel ban.
The Seattle Times reports Inslee has also made it clear he does not support the president’s actions over the Affordable Care Act or transgender issues.
