On Sunday morning, April 2, a 2-year-old boy shot and killed himself after finding his father’s loaded gun on the family’s kitchen table.

The father, 22-year-old Eric Javier Morales of Corpus Christi, Texas, is now charged with the criminally-negligent homicide.

Morales told police he left his gun on a tray on the kitchen table after he returned home from dinner Saturday night. He left the home Sunday morning, forgetting about his firearm.

While Morales was gone, 2-year-old Ryan Morales found and was handling his father’s gun when it fired, hitting him in the right eye and killing him.

The boy’s mother, Jennifer Voigt, and a 1-year-old child were also home at the time of the horrible incident. Voigt told police she did not know the gun was on the table.

Eric Morales was apprehended by police at the hospital where he was with his 2-year-old child. It is reported that he assisted investigators before being charged and has currently been released from jail on bond.
