Peter Selis, 49, opened fire on party-goers at a swimming pool near an upscale San Diego apartment complex on Sunday night. The incident took place at a birthday party at the La Jolla Crossroads Apartments at Judicial Drive and Sydney Court in San Diego, California. Selis killed a guest and injured seven more.

Police arrived on the scene at 6:10 p.m. local time, where they were forced to shoot Selis dead. Emergency vehicles transported eight of the guests to a local hospital. Seven of the injured had been shot and the eighth had sprained a wrist in the scuffle.

The sole fatal victim in the incident was an unidentified African-American woman. Four of the remaining victims were African-American women, two were African-American men, and one was Hispanic.  Selis was white.

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer made the following statement at a news conference:

“This is truly a horrific act of violence that took place here today. Our entire city, all of our thoughts and prayers, all San Diegans’ thoughts and prayers, are with the victims and their families tonight.”

A motive is unknown at this time, though investigators believe the attack may have been a motivated hate crime.
