Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.) said immigration reform has always needed to be at the top of Democrats’ priority list.

It is reported that Gutiérrez is one of the biggest advocates in finding a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants.

He has said the Republican Party is not to blame for the “dark” days of immigration and, instead, puts blame on the lack of effort from the Democratic Party in making immigration a priority.

“We win the House in 2007. And I remember going to [House Democratic leadership], ‘We’re in the majority! Time for immigration reform,’” he says. “And you know what they told me? ‘Can you go find about 50 Republicans to join you and then come back and talk to us?’”

Gutiérrez said concern for immigration has not only been on the rise because of Trump’s recent orders but also because of the growing Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC).

“It took us a while to get that standing in the hierarchy of causes. We have become a value in the Democratic Party that needs to be protected,” Gutiérrez states.

The Hill reports Gutiérrez is pleased to see large crowds concerned over Trump’s immigration order and that he is confident immigration will now be at the forefront of the Democratic Party.
