I find it equal parts sad and frustrating when I hear a famous African-American use race-baiting remarks for the sake of making a splash. I’d say I hate it when any famous person drives racial tensions with hate-driven remarks, but fact is, I never hear white people say the sort of thing like I heard this evening.
Tonight, while on the red carpet, HBO star Issa Rae said she was rooting for everyone “black” at the the Emmy Awards. Rae, who is black, is one of the stars of HBO’s “Insecure.” She made her comment to a Variety reporter. See the video below.
The sad part is the lack of intelligence that comes with such an asinine statement. Sadly, Rae’s comment dumps gas onto an already raging fire.
Racial tensions in the U.S. were getting better until Barack Obama took the White House. That’s my opinion of course, but fact is, what took place in Ferguson, Missouri years ago gave rise to Black Lives Matter.
Obama fueled Ferguson and the BLM movement by not condemning the riots, and by not supporting the police who have to deal with thugs that resist arrest and have criminal records a mile long. Michael Brown, the man killed in Ferguson, is a perfect example.
It’s frustrating because the double standard is so over the top, that I don’t see how and when it gets better. For example, President Trump made a remark condemning hate on all sides — both the left and right — and yet he was crucified for it. But had Obama made that same comment, nothing would have been said because he’s from the left.
The second double standard is who gets away with what.
Imagine for the moment a white actress is on the red carpet and says, “Tonight, I am rooting for everyone who is white.” Immediately, she’s labeled a racist. The next day she’ll probably lose whatever role she had in on a TV show, and her career would be deemed over. But Rae is not white, she is black, and so nothing will happen to Rae. Not a single thing.
Human behavior is human behavior, there is no way around it. Statements like the one made by Rae should be viewed as ignorant and blown off. But truth is, deep down it pisses off many white people who are tired of the double standard. They are tired of being called racists. They won’t say it, they can’t admit it, but the resentment towards Rae after tonight will be there. Therefore, she’ll probably lose a role in the future when her path crosses with a white person she pissed off tonight. And this is how racial tensions continue.
Make no mistake, her loss of opportunity won’t be because she’s black, but because of what she said. In saying she is rooting for people base on their color, she is also saying she is rooting against people because of their color. That is a racist mindset, and a racist remark. What’s even worse, is that her comment will probably cause other African-Americans to lose opportunities. How sad, how frustrating. Please share this if you agree.
