A high school in Detroit is embracing social divide by holding a Muslim girls only prom.
Hamtramck High School’s “Princess Prom” originated from a group of five Muslim girls in 2012. According to the school, the event was designed to create a “safe space” for Muslim cultural values. Michigan Live reports it is “intended to create a safe space for Muslim girls who normally cover up in hijab to let their hair down in an environment with no boys and no cellphones.”
The girls will not be allowed to have their phones on them during the event to prevent any “sharing” of photos with their hair down. The Muslim religion is very strict when it comes to women exposing their hair in public. The reasoning behind the event suggests that if pictures are not taken and shared to the public, as are with most proms and high school events, the girls can rest assure they will not be acting against their faith.
This year the exclusive prom is expecting at least 250 girls to attend, up from 230 last year.
