Since she wasn’t just a former first lady but a failed presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton admitted in an interview Friday that she tried to get out of going to President Donald Trump’s inauguration. She also took the opportunity to slam his inaugural speech.
Appearing on BBC One’s “The Graham Norton Show,” Clinton admitted, “I really tried to get out of going,” because I was going, not as the candidate or the opponent, but as a former first lady, because the tradition is presidents and former first ladies all show up, regardless of party, to show support.”
Explaining that she assumed other former presidents may not go, Clinton said, “We thought ‘OK, maybe others aren’t going.’ We called the Bushes, and the elder Bushes were in the hospital, which I think was legitimate.”
“And so then, we called the younger Bushes and they said, ‘Yeah, we’re going.’ We called the Carters, and they said, ‘Yeah, we’re going,’ so Bill and I looked at each other and we said, ‘We gotta go.’”
She lamented, “What I wanted to have happen, despite the kind of campaign that he ran … I wanted him to rise to the occasion of being our president, and being the president for everybody, not just for people who supported him. That didn’t happen.”
Clinton said she was sitting there at the inauguration, “listening to this really dark, divisive speech,” which she described as a “cry from the white nationalist gut.”
“I was so disappointed, really so sad that it wasn’t an outreach, but a narrowing and a hammering of what he had said before,” she claimed.
In another segment of the interview, she again took a swipe at President Trump over his Twitter posts, and accused him of doing little about the hurricane in Puerto Rico.
