Actress Lainie Kazan, known for her role as Maria Portokalos in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” was arrested on Christmas Eve for shoplifting at a Los Angeles supermarket.
According to authorities, the 77-year-old actress stole $180 worth of food from Gelson’s on Sunday. She attempted to walk out of the store with the unpaid goods before an employee stopped her at her car and called the cops.
The actress claimed she was taking the food because she was penniless. Kazan was arrested on the charge for petty theft and released from custody at the police station without bail.
Kazan is recognized for her role in the original 2002 film, which is one of the highest-grossing romantic comedies of all time. She reprised the role again last year in its sequel, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.”
