Residents of Los Angeles County were surprised Sunday morning to find that a vandal had changed the famed Hollywood Sign to read ‘Hollyweed.’
The Hollywood Sign is situated on Mount Lee in the Hollywood Hills and overlooks the city. CBS News in Los Angeles reported on the incident, which occurred overnight on Saturday.
LAPD Officer Christopher Garcia said tarps adorned with peace signs were affixed to the letters, changing the O’s in the sign to E’s.
This isn’t the first time the sign has been targeted. A man by the name of Danny Finegood made headlines 41 years ago when, on this day, he too clandestinely changed the sign to read ‘Hollyweed.’ Finegood said altering the sign was a celebratory act for him, marking California’s then more relaxed marijuana laws taking effect.
In November, California voters approved a ballot initiative allowing recreational use of marijuana, joining six other states and the District of Columbia.
