Homeland Security Boss Announces When Wall Will Be Finished

Retired four-star Marine general and now U.S. Homeland Security Sec. John F. Kelly said the wall at the U.S.- Mexico border should be finished in two years.

During an interview with Fox News, Sec. Kelly said, “The wall will be built where it’s needed first, and then it will be filled in. That’s the way I look at it. I really hope to have it done within the next two years.”

Kelly traveled to McAllen, Texas, on Wednesday to look at the wall, and described the process of building the wall to Fox:

“Any discussion about the protection of our southwest border involves discussion of physical barriers but also of technological sensors, things like that,” he said. “But it’s a layered approach, and it’s got to be backed up by great men and women who are going to make sure that the wall is intact.”

Homeland Security is in the process of trying to attain the funding for the wall but Sec. Kelly is confident that the money will be there when needed.

“We’re looking at the money aspect,” Kelly added, “I think the funding will come relatively quickly and, like I said, we will build it where it’s needed first, as identified by the men and women who work the border.”

Kelly has said it should be a few months before the project begins and, in the mean time, Homeland Security will begin strengthening the resources at the border to enhance the processing speeds of those apprehended down from 600 days to a few weeks.

Kelly’s also shared his thoughts on the push for more assets at the border: “If we could surge the court proceedings — immigration court proceedings on the border — and, within the law, do it very rapidly, I think that alone would act as a huge deterrent for people who are considering making the trip up.”
