On Wednesday, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly told Guatemalans they are wasting their time if they are thinking about crossing the border illegally.

According to Reuters, Kelly said his department is speeding up the deportation process.

“If you’re a Guatemalan who is considering paying a great deal of money to a coyote (smuggler) to bring you to the United States, you’ll be wasting your money,” Kelly said at a Guatemalan Air Force base where 347 deportees had just arrived from the United States on a recent flight. “You will be returned very quickly,” he reiterated.

The deportation process has historically been slow for illegal aliens detained in the U.S. Since there is such a lengthy backlog, it can take years to deport even one of them.

Kelly said his department is cracking down on those currently trying to cross the border. The Department of Homeland Security recently announced it will deport non-Mexican immigrants to Mexico, regardless of their nationality, a decision which Mexican officials are not accepting.
