Boston police were met with gunfire when they showed up at the penthouse apartment where Dr. Richard Field and Dr. Lina Bolanos lived before being murdered by an ex-convict on Friday night.

Shooting back and hitting the killer, officers were able to apprehend Bampumim Teixeira, 30.  Then police found the couple dead in their own home.  Their throats were slit, their hands were bound, messages of retribution had been written on the walls, and photos of the couple had been cut up.

Teixeira was taken to Tufts Medical Center for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Field, 49, worked at North Shore Pain Management and had previously been an anesthesiologist and pain management specialist at Beverly Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Bolanos, 38, was a pediatric anesthesiologist at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. She was also an anesthesia instructor at Harvard Medical School. The couple were engaged to be married.

“Dr. Field was a guiding vision at North Shore Pain Management and was instrumental in the creation of this practice,” said NSPM in a statement.

Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary’s CEO John Fernandez stated, “Dr. Bolanos was an outstanding pediatric anesthesiologist and a wonderful colleague, in the prime of both her career and life.”

Police say the crime does not appear to be random, and the two doctors likely knew their killer, but no motive has so far been established.

“For someone to come here, go up to the 11th floor to the penthouse, we got to believe that somehow there had some type of knowledge of each other,” said Boston Police Commissioner William B Evans.

Teixeira had previously been convicted on two counts of larceny after trying to rob the same bank in 2014 and 2016 with notes demanding money. He was released from jail in April after serving nine months.

Friends, relatives and colleagues are mystified by the murders, describing the couple as “good, kind, gentle people.”

“Hopefully, this guy that they caught will be able to say who he is and why this was done,” said Michael Gibbs, Bolanos’s godfather. “That’s all we’re hoping, is to get some kind of information. Why did this happen?”
