Crowds of people were marching in the streets in Charlottesville, Virginia Saturday noon, when suddenly the chants were replaced with a loud crash and horrified screams, as a three-car “accident” plowed into the crowd, mowing down protesters.

At least six people were injured, with some considered life-threatening, according to reports. UPDATE at 3:30 pm ET confirms 1 person has died from the attack.

Three cars were involved in the pileup, but reports indicate at least one car caused it, as witnesses say a dark vehicle “sped, very quickly, down this road and rammed into the crowd,” then, “he backed up and he went back in again.”

Witnesses are describing it as definitely intentional, although police are still investigating.

“Yeah, it was intentional,” said witness Dan Miller. “About 40 miles an hour, hit about 15-20 people, crashed into the two cars in front of it, and then backed up and sped away while cops were standing on the side of the road and didn’t do anything.”

This is a developing story.
