House Democrat Vows to Boycott Trump’s First Congressional Speech

Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., the senior ranking member on the House Financial Services Committee, plans to forego Trump’s first speech addressing Congress on Tuesday evening.

Waters told House Democrats at a caucus meeting Tuesday morning that she will not attend the speech because she thinks she will not be able to control herself.

“The president is not going to say what I want him to say,” Waters told ABC News reporters after the caucus meeting. “He’s going to take credit for everything.”

Waters appeared on a news segment this afternoon with MSNBC’s Katy Tur, who held the California Democrat’s feet to the fire when she asked:

“Back in 2009, when Joe Wilson screamed, ‘You Lie!’ to President Obama, you said that all of you in Congress felt embarrassed after that. So, what do you say to those critics who say you not showing up to this joint address, which is about the country more so than it’s about the president, that it is the same sort of disrespect?”

Immediately, Waters began stammering and replied it is “absolutely not the same thing” and “the two cannot be compared.” She argued that tonight’s address is “ceremonial” and an event where people “laugh, smile, shake hands, and hug each other, and honor the president, which she is “not about” and intends to only interact with Trump “only when he puts up his budget and his agenda that I am going to have to fight.” She followed it up with, “I don’t choose to go and honor him.”

Waters also refused to attend Trump’s inauguration in January, saying she “never contemplated even going near any of those activities.” Nearly 70 other Democratic lawmakers followed suit and skipped out on the ceremony. Since her absence from his swearing in ceremony, Waters has called members of Trump’s team a “bunch of scumbags” and that he is “leading himself” to impeachment.
