Mainstream media outlets including CNN and MSNBC are promoting a conspiracy theory in which President Donald Trump is being diagnosed as mentally ill by a psychiatrist who doesn’t known him in person and has never treated him professionally.
Yale psychiatry professor Bandy Lee has been claiming for more than a year that Trump is mentally impaired and unfit to serve. She claims his tweets are the evidence.
During Trump’s presidential campaign, Lee went against industry rules about publicly diagnosing a patient without his consent or an in-person examination, claiming that she is “obligated to break them in times of emergency.”
She even went on to write a book about it, called, “The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President.” Lee’s book, which came out Oct. 3, stated that psychiatrists have a “duty to warn” the country about President Trump.
Three days after her book came out, the APA issued a statement reaffirming the importance of the Goldwater Rule, which instructs physicians “not to provide professional opinions in the media about the mental health of someone they have not personally examined and without patient consent or other legal authority,” according to a report in The Daily Caller.
The APA directly rebuked Lee’s “duty to warn” argument. “The APA would also like to dispel a common misconception about the so-called ‘Duty to Warn.’ The duty to warn is a legal concept which varies from state to state, but which generally requires psychiatrists to breach the confidentiality of the therapeutic session when a risk of danger to others becomes known during treatment of the patient. It does not apply if there is no physician-patient relationship,” the APA stated.
Despite the APA’s statement, Democratic lawmakers have attempted to legitimize and promote the professor’s accusations. BuzzFeed reported in October that six different Democrats in Congress reached out to Lee regarding her claims about Trump’s mental health.
Last month, Lee briefed a handful of congressional Democrats on her arguments over two days, Politico reported on Wednesday. Lee, who has neither met nor examined Trump, told the Democratic congressmen that the president is “unraveling.”
After the Politico report came out, establishment media outlets went on to broadcast Lee’s year-old allegations as “breaking news”.
With no documented medical episodes to point to, the media is echoing Lee’s statement that Trump’s tweets are proof of his mental “un-fitness”.
Repeatedly, liberal media have blasted out the theory to the public, pounding their message home, in an effort to convince people that Trump is mentally unfit.
