Husband stabs wife, then leaps from 8th-floor apartment window

On Sunday night, police discovered a man lying next to his Harlem apartment building on Frederick Douglass Boulevard, just after 9:15 p.m.

Francisco Ferreiras, 69, had jumped to his death from his 8th-floor apartment window.

When police searched the apartment, the couple had shared in the Harlem area of Manhattan, they discovered the man’s wife, Bernarda Ferreiras, 53, who had been stabbed multiple times in the torso.

Officers also found a knife at the scene.

The wife was taken to a Harlem hospital where she was pronounced dead; her husband was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors said the couple had three daughters and seemed happy, but it was revealed recently that the wife was trying to leave Mr. Ferreiras.

A neighbor reported hearing fighting just before the presumed murder-suicide.

“They were arguing and then there was one loud scream from the woman. Then I heard what was the man’s body hit the ground,” she said. “It was a loud boom. I looked out the window and I knew he was dead.”

The argument was reportedly over a trip the wife was planning to take to the Dominican Republic. Bernarda Ferreiras’ mother, whose home in the Dominican Republic was being remodeled, had been staying with the couple, and Bernarda was planning to take a trip back to the Caribbean country with her mother.

The building supervisor, Luis Caraballo, was also shocked. “This has been a surprise. They were friendly people. He used to ask me to go to his apartment for coffee when he saw me working on his floor,” he said, adding, “He was very happy, He had a grandson. That’s why this is such a big surprise.”

Another neighbor stated, “When you’d see them together, they were always smiling, they always said, ‘Hi.’ We’re shocked right now, just shocked. We would have never suspected something like this.”

Martiza Carmona, a neighbor who heard the thump on the pavement when Ferreiras jumped from his bedroom window, said, “I can’t forget because the only thing I hear is that thump.”

“I talked to [the wife] many times. They were good people. She was going to the Dominican Republic with her [mother] today,” Carmona added.

Mrs. Ferreiras’ mother was also in the apartment at the time of the stabbing.
