Senator Ted Cruz of Texas will speak tonight at the Republican Convention in Cleveland. He has two options as I see it. One option destroys his future chances of being elected president. The other option leaves the door open.
Because Trump is the bigger man, he put aside the hard feelings and invited Cruz to speak at tonight’s event. That said, don’t believe for one second that Trump didn’t cover his bases. I’ll place most of my chips on the bet that says Trump gave away a primetime speaking slot to Cruz in return for Ted’s endorsement of Trump. And because Cruz is a politician, he accepted the deal so he can get one more national TV appearance before fading out of sight in Texas.
But lets assume I bet incorrectly. Lets say there is no deal in place. One thing is for certain…. Tonight, all of America will watch ‘lying Ted’ try to position himself for another presidential run in 2020, or 2024 if Trump wins this election.
So to position himself as a future candidate, Cruz has to make a decision — does he endorse Trump?
If Cruz does not endorse Trump then Cruz is finished as a politician. If he hangs Trump out to dry I will bet all my chips on Republican voters holding him accountable if Trump loses to Hillary. Fair or unfair, voters will point the finger at Cruz if “Never Trump” conservatives don’t show up on Election Day.
If Cruz is smart, aside from saying “Hello” and “goodnight”, every word out of his mouth should be about Trump and how he is the perfect leader to fix the problems we face as a nation. If he veers away from talking about Trump, it better be to talk about Hillary being a crook. But make no mistake — Hillary is not a rock he can hide behind — if Cruz spends all of his 15-minutes ripping on Hillary and in the process does not cheer for Trump, then Ted will pay the price because people like me will never let him forget it.
