OMAHA – An illegal alien accused of hitting a car head-on in west Omaha and fleeing the scene was arrested Monday and remains in police custody.
Illegal alien Alejandro Lara-Lozano, 31, was arrested at his home in Omaha on Monday and charged with the felony of failing to render aid during a serious injury crash, after an accident on Feb. 4th left two teenage girls maimed.
Investigators believe that Lara-Lozano was packing up his belongings and planning to flee to Mexico after the accident occurred.
According to police incident reports, Lara-Lozano allegedly crossed into oncoming traffic near Oak View Mall and hit a car head-on, seriously injuring two Marian High School girls.
KETV 7 reports that one of the victims, Madison Reed, 16, had a shattered heel and fractured vertebra, but her friend was admitted to ICU for serious injuries caused by the head-on crash. Sources told police that Lara-Lozano and another man riding with him jumped out of the truck and ran away. It is believed that he took off running because he is an illegal alien.
Deputy Douglas Co. Attorney Brenda Beadle told reporters: “He returned back (to Omaha) as he, I think, was loading up his vehicle. We believe his intention was to flee to Mexico and as he was loading up his vehicle the police were able to apprehend him.”
Reed’s grandmother, Joan Reed, recalled of the crash scene: “I was just horrified, you know, at the condition of my granddaughter’s car … how they survived this accident I’ll never know.”
She told reported about how she felt after learning that Lara-Lozano took off from the scene: “Very angry,” Reed said. “Thinking to myself, how can you just get out of your vehicle and then look at these girls, seeing the extent of the damage?”
Court documents indicate that a Facebook message posted by Lara-Lozano’s ex-wife tipped off police to the identity of the hit-and-run driver. Reportedly, the wife contacted Joan Reed via Facebook Messanger and admitted that her ex-husband was driving that night and was hiding out in Illinois.
After his arrest, Joan Reed learned he is an illegal alien. “To us, it makes no difference who he is or where he’s from, whether he’s here legally or illegally,” Reed said. “That’s just not something that makes a difference to us at this point.”
He is currently being held in state custody and is pending a potential deportation hearing. If the courts find him guilty, he could be facing up to four years in jail.
Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine told reporters on Thursday, “At this time, we made sure we connection with immigration and they have a hold on him for that purpose.”
It has reported that Lara-Lozano had 3 previous DUI arrests in Illinois and Iowa. Lara-Lozano is in jail on a $3 million bond and is next scheduled in court on March 10, KETV reports.
As for Madison Reed’s recovery, her injuries have caused her to put her dancing on hold, and her grandmother says she is dealing with “emotional struggles” and “she’s just trying to kind of come to grips with all of it.”
Madison’s friend who was also injured has not been named, but has been released from the hospital, says the report.
