After a woman was killed in a hit-and-run accident with an illegal alien who has been deported five times, the victims family is demanding justice.
On February 19 Sandra Duran was killed near the corner of Sepulveda Boulevard and Plummer Street in Los Angeles.
According to authorities, 45-year-old Estuardo Alvarado, who has an extensive criminal record, was fleeing the scene of another accident when he crashed into Duran’s vehicle.
Alvarado, who is a citizen of Mexico, has been removed from the U.S. several times between 1998 and 2011 per U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.
ABC7 noted that court records revealed that Alvarado has previously been charged with various crimes such as possession of a weapon, driving under the influence and drug charges.
The victim’s sister, Juanita Hernandez, said, “Knowing the history that he had, with the DUIs and so forth, it was like a slap in the hand and sent back, and he came back and it shouldn’t have been done like that. He’ll destroy someone else’s family,” Hernandez shared. “We want him put away for good. I want justice for my sister…her life not to go in vain.”
Hernandez continued, “There’s a lot of good people that, you know, have come to this country to make a life and a living for themselves, and to have someone like him come in that did drugs or, you know, drinking under the influence and has nothing coming for his life – those are the people that need to stay over there.”
“If the laws would have been a lot stricter, this could have been prevented, but he had a record long already, so that tells you right there,” said father Santo Duran.
Duran’s family believes that Alvarado, who faces five felony counts, including murder, should spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Alvarado is currently being held in the Men’s Central Jail on $2.23 million bail in relation to the crash, and ICE reportedly has a detainer on him.
