NORTH CAROLINA–An 18-year-old boy was taken into custody on Monday and charged with first-degree murder for the gruesome decapitation of his mother.
Oliver Mauricio Funes Machada was discovered by police walking down the street holding his mother’s severed head in one hand and a bloodied butcher’s knife in the other.
Police had been called to the scene around 12.45 p.m. Monday after Funes called 911 to alert them that he had just murdered his mother at their home. Franklin County Officers who arrived on the scene report that the body’s of his mother, Yesenia Funez Beatriz Machado, 35, was found inside the family’s home, where they have lived less than one year.
Sheriff Kent Winstead told reporters that the boy’s two younger sisters were at the residence, though were not harmed. A fourth child was at school when the horrific crime took place.
When Funes’ father arrived home after work around 5 p.m., he was reportedly inconsolable and so grief-stricken he had to be removed from the scene by officers.
It still remains unclear what possible motive or events led to the murder or how many times the mother was stabbed, says the report.
ABC 11 reports that federal officials announced on Tuesday that Oliver Machada is living in the country illegally and was issued an immigration detainer during his first court appearance.
“ICE is focused on identifying, arresting and removing public safety threats, such as convicted criminal aliens and gang members, as well as individuals who have violated our nation’s immigration laws,” a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesperson told ABC11.
At that same preliminary hearing, prosecutors stated that mental health may have played a role, since Machada reportedly took four different medications for psychosis and schizophrenia.

WISTV 10 reports that “pictures or video could become part of the investigation” because body cameras worn by deputies “may have been recording” when Funez walked outside of the home holding his mother’s severed head.
Oliver Machada has been ordered to appear for a second time on March 14.
At a press conference, reporters were asking an array of shocking questions, including, “Do you know how many wounds she had?”
