Salvadorian illegal immigrant Pedro Figueroa Zarceno, 32, is filing a lawsuit against the city of San Francisco.

He claims that after he reported his car stolen to SFPD authorities, they apprehended and sent him to U.S. immigration officials due to his undocumented status. According to Zarceno, he believes his rights were violated through the city’s sanctuary policy.

In November 2015, Zarceno went to the police station in San Francisco to report his car stolen. After it was recovered, he was apprehended by federal immigration agents.

“We’ll obviously have to review the lawsuit before we can comment on it,” John Cote, a spokesman for the San Francisco city attorney, told Reuters. “That being said, San Francisco has strong policies in place to encourage victims and witnesses to report crimes without fear of being deported.”

Zarceno will be represented by Saira Hussain, an attorney for the nonprofit group Asian Americans Advancing Justice.
