A news report from Junction City, Kansas revealed that a Mexican man in the United States illegally – who has been deported 10 times within the past 6 years – is now facing charges of raping a child last month.
The incident allegedly occurred on September 27. Tomas Martinez-Maldonado, 41, sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl while traveling on a Greyhound bus on Interstate 70 in Geary County, Kansas.
The bus made a stop in Kansas City, where the suspect was arrested and returned to the Geary County Detention Center. A criminal complaint was filed against him on September 30.
According to the Hays Post, Martinez-Maldonado has been living in Marietta, Georgia.
“A Greyhound bus had made a stop in Kansas City and there was an alleged rape that occurred on the bus, however they had no idea where this rape took place,” Geary County Sheriff Tony Wolf told Hays Post
He is currently jailed in Geary County of a $100,000 bond, facing charges of raping a child. A public defender was appointed to represent him during his first court appearance Thursday, according to the Kanas City Star. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating the case.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said the suspect has a 2013 federal felony conviction for illegal re-entry into the U.S., making him an “enforcement priority.” They will reportedly be taking custody of him when the Kansas case is completed.
