High school graduate Mayte Lara sent out a tweet after her graduation from Crocket High School in Austin that went viral, much to her surprise, has angered many, and put her college scholarship in jeopardy.
Her Twitter message said, “Valedictorian, 4.5GPA, full tuition paid for at UT, 13 cords/medals, nice legs, oh and I’m undocumented.” Many are upset about an illegal immigrant being awarded the free scholarship to the University of Texas, over other American students, reports The Daily Mail.
One person tweeted back, “I did it illegally, nobody should get a short cut.” Another wrote, “Not exactly living in the shadows, is she? We’re a nation of laws. I abide by them and so should she.”
Soon realizing she had made a mistake, Lara tweeted, “I want all this attention from strangers to stop already.” Her twitter account has since been deleted.
Ironically, the school Mayte Lara goes to is named after Davy Crockett, who lost his life fighting at The Alamo against the Mexican Army, which was trying to prevent Texas breaking away and eventually joining the U.S.
Texas passed a bill in 2001 enabling undocumented students to qualify for in-state tuition at public colleges and universities.
