A pro-amnesty Illinois congressman whose primary platform is fighting for illegal immigrants, open borders and more lenient immigration policies has reportedly been paying his family hundreds of thousands of dollars from his campaign funds since 2010.
Rep. Luis Gutierrez added his wife, Soraida Gutierrez, to his campaign six years ago to fill the role of office manager, treasurer and fundraiser, reports the Washington Free Beacon. In total, she has been paid $312,000 total over the past six years, from the Gutierrez for Congress campaign committee funds.
Gutierrez’s daughters have also been paid from the fund, with daughter Omaira collecting $4,270 for bookkeeping services, and daughter Jessica receiving $600 for fundraising efforts.
Paying family members to work on a campaign is not illegal, says Dave Levinthal of the Center for Responsive Politics. But… “it gets into sticky territory when the candidate stands to benefit personally in a significant way.”
Rep. Jesse Jackson and his wife plead guilty in 2013 for using $750,000 of campaign funds for personal use.
Gutierrez is a supporter of Hillary Clinton, and was appointed by Clinton as one of the 15 people chosen to write the Democrat Party platform ahead of the Democratic National Convention.
