Although Tehran has denied any contact with the Taliban, it is apparent they somehow got in touch because the Iranians are inviting Taliban leaders to join them at an Iranian Islamic conference .

According to Iran’s Alarabiya, Iranian cleric Mohsen Araki, the Secretary-General of the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought, held a press conference on Tuesday stating that Tehran has invited moderate figures such as the Taliban to attend the two-day International Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran.

Iranian Mehr news agency reports that, “the invitation was sent to some Islamic and political figures in the Taliban movement who believe in the unity of Muslims.”

Araki said that, “Iran has always held contacts with some parties in the Taliban movement, who believe in the Islamic unity.”

Just two days earlier, the Iranian ambassador to Kabul, Mohammad Reza Bahrami spoke about talks between his country and hardline Taliban.

The Afghan authorities had constantly accused Tehran of providing military and logistical support to the Taliban. The Taliban has increased its operations in various regions of their country.
