Hurricane Irma is a monster. There is no better proof than the video below.

A beach-goer in the Bahamas was shocked to find that the ocean water was gone at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning — all that was left was sand and shells. “I am in disbelief right now… This is Long Island, Bahamas and the ocean water is missing!!!” tweeted @Kaydi_K. “That’s as far as they see. #HurricaneIrma.”

A video of the phenomenon shows how Hurricane Irma’s Atlantic course had caused it to suck all the water away from the Bahamas shoreline as the Category 5 storm passed just south of the islands, tearing its way through the Caribbean Islands; leaving at least 24 people dead.

The video, which is about two-minutes long, has been retweeted and commented on more than 100,000 times. Many on social media worried that the water would return in a rush, like a tsunami, but others assured that what happened was a rare but natural occurrence caused by a strong hurricane and very low pressure, which draws water into the core of the storm.

For a few hours or days, a storm of this magnitude can even change the shape of an ocean.

Angela Fritz, an atmospheric scientist, predicted that the water would return slowly, possibly by Sunday afternoon.

More than six million people were ordered to evacuate Florida over the weekend as the storm moved towards the mainland.

Cuba was slammed by the storm on Saturday, which blew through with winds of up to 160 mph. It was the first time the island had suffered such a strong hurricane since 1924.

The hurricane has since been downgraded to a Category 3, but the National Hurricane Center has  predicted it would strengthen again as it moved towards the US.
