Islamic court goes after gay couple

Two gay men caught having sex in Indonesia were beaten for their acts and now face trial in an Islamic court. Video captured one of the men being hit on the head with a rock by one of the two Indonesians who found them.

According to Independent, the men were turned over to religious police and could receive 100 strokes of the cane if found guilty of committing the act in an Islamic court.

Officials in the conservative province of Aceh said Human Rights Watch (HRW) is asking for the men’s release. Aceh is the only province in Indonesia that considers same-sex relations a crime. The area uses Sharia as its legal code in addition to the national criminal code.

“These men had their privacy invaded in a frightening and humiliating manner and now face public torture for the ‘crime’ of their alleged sexual orientation,” HRW’s Phelim Kine said earlier this week.

Aceh enacted a law in 2014 that criminalizes any person caught engaging in gay sex and sentences them with 100 lashes, 100 months in jail, or a fine of 1,000 grams of gold. The law also targets Muslim women who don’t wear headscarves and those who wear clothes that are too tight.

According to Human Rights Watch, authorities in the province on the northern tip of Sumatra island caned 339 people in 2016 for a range of crimes.
