A Facebook video created by an Australian-based Islamic group which condones domestic violence and describes hitting wives as “a beautiful blessing” has come under harsh criticism from politicians and advocacy groups.
Featuring two Muslim women, the video was shot during an all-women’s event in Sydney. It was posted to Facebook by the women’s branch of Hizb ut-Tahrir.
The women talk about the fact that their men can discipline their wives by “hitting” them with something that won’t cause pain, such as a small stick or a twisted scarf. “It’s very evident that this is symbolic in nature,” one of the women explained.
Michaelia Cash of Australia’s Federal Minister for Women said, “The Facebook video posted by Women of Hizb ut-Tahrir Australia condoning and encouraging violence against women is abhorrent. These attitudes have no place in modern Australia. Domestic violence is abuse – plain and simple. It is not ‘a beautiful blessing’ as the video describes it.”
Silma Ihram of the Australian Muslim Women’s Association claimed that Islam in no way condones violence, but the video makes it clear that the Qur’an actually mandates that men beat their wives:
“Men have authority over women because Allah has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. They guard their unseen parts because Allah has guarded them. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds apart and beat them.” — Qur’an 4:34
Muhammad “struck me on the chest which caused me pain, and then said: Did you think that Allah and His Apostle would deal unjustly with you?” — Aisha (Sahih Muslim 2127)
“Unfortunately, patriarchal cultures and organizations continue to try and relegate Muslim women to domestic duties and control by their husbands,” said Ihram, adding, “This was not the practice of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him) nor the intent of the jurists in their interpretations of Islamic law, and definitely should not be condoned in any form today.”
The wife beating conversation starts at about the 13-minute mark:
