Israeli soccer team ambushed in attack by skinheads (video)

In Poland, where around 3 million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, a visiting Jewish soccer team has been the target of an attack.

The Jerusalem Post is reporting an anti-Semitic incident which occurred Wednesday evening in Poland when masked hooligans attacked a group of Israeli soccer players after a game.

A match had just ended between Israel’s Hapoel Petah Tikva team and Poland’s MKS Ciechanow in Suchocin, a town near Warsaw.

The attackers reportedly waited until police left the area, then came running out of the woods onto the field and attacked the team.

Petah Tikva coach Oren Krispin said, “After the match, we went to the lobby of the hotel while a couple of our staff members were collecting the equipment. Around 15-20 skinheads came out of the woods and raced onto the field and began punching and kicking them. One of the players in the lobby noticed this and we all ran out to help. Once the skinheads saw us, they ran away.”

Facial injuries were reportedly suffered by two staff members of the Israeli team.

Israeli Embassy spokesman Michal Sobelman, said, “The Israeli embassy in Warsaw has been shocked and saddened by the news of another anti-Semitic incident. These ‘pseudo-fans’ not only harm good Polish-Israeli relations but, first of all, they are damaging to Poland’s image abroad.”

The attackers were reportedly identified as fans of reigning Polish champion Legia Warsaw; the attack was condemned by an MKS Ciechanow official, who said their fans had no part in it.

“First and foremost, we emphasize that our Club regrets the whole situation and strongly condemns the behavior of the perpetrators of this perilous incident, but, at the same time, we stress that none of the members of our Club-related community had anything to do with the whole situation,” MKS Ciechanow said in a statement.

Polish police are said to be investigating the case, and government spokesman Rafal Bochenek said those responsible would be detained.
