Jill Stein Asks Justice Department to Investigate Election System

After reaching a dead-end in her attempt to force a recount in three swing states, former Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein is taking another route.

Stein’s attorney sent a letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Friday, asking the Justice Department to investigate the “integrity” of the entire U.S. electoral system.

The 8-page letter cited the “vulnerability and unreliability of our voting apparatus”, and said that many voting machines in the three states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin malfunctioned or broke.

The letter indicates race plays a part in the voting errors, alleging that problems occurred “especially” in communities of color.

“We write to urge the Department of Justice to launch an investigation into the integrity of our nation’s election system generally, and our nation’s voting machines specifically, based on the information we discovered in the course of this representation. The attempted recount process has uncovered that voting machines relied on in these states and across the country are prone to human and machine error, especially in under-resourced black and brown communities, and vulnerable to tampering and hacking. The recount also found that the states’ efforts to protect their systems may be insufficient, particularly in low-income communities and communities of color. Each of these grave concerns warrants federal intervention.”

The letter expressed concerns about the possibility of cyber attacks, with some machines being connected to the internet, and also mentioned states whose voting systems have no paper trail to audit.

The Washington Examiner noted that Stein raised millions of dollars for her recount effort, which only resulted in the state of Wisconsin conducting a recount.

Trump was the beneficiary of the Wisconsin recount, gaining 162 votes to his total.
