Caught on a hot mike Wednesday, MSNBC “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough was heard suggesting that President Trump is not a Christian.
Scarborough made the comment after his co-host and fiancee Mika Brzezinski previewed the next segment, which featured Trump’s meeting with Pope Francis.
“They didn’t actually see eye to eye during the presidential campaign, so what happened during Donald Trump’s meeting today with Pope Francis? We’ll go through that and what drove them apart in the first place…” teased Brzezinski.
Then, right before the show cut to the first commercial, Scarborough could be heard saying, “Well, the pope’s a Christian.”
During the presidential campaign, the pope publicly disagreed with Trump’s promise to build a wall on the Mexican border, intimating that it wasn’t a “Christian” thing to do. Himself a Presbyterian, Trump retorted, saying it was “disgraceful” for the religious leader to question his faith.
Trump has become the first sitting president to visit holy sites from all three major religions: he met with Muslim leaders in Saudi Arabia, prayed at the Jewish Western Wall and visited the church where Jesus Christ was crucified.
The president traveled to the Vatican on Wednesday to meet with Pope Francis. The two leaders got along well.
