The actor who played Batman in the 1960s hit television series has died. Adam West, 88, died peacefully in Los Angeles following a brief battle with leukemia, according to a statement released by his family.
Although he attracted a cult following for his portrayal of Batman and Bruce Wayne— superhero’s alter ego—West later struggled to find acting work. In his most recent role, West appeared in the animated comedy Family Guy as the mayor of the town of Quahog who was named Adam West.
“Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight, and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero,” West’s family said in a statement.
The Batman television series became an unexpected hit that featured West and co-star Burt Ward, who played Batman’s sidekick Robin, as the Dynamic Duo, and onscreen fight-scene graphics such as “Wham!” and “Pow!”
Although West was challenged to separate himself from his Batman role, he appeared in nearly 50 films during his long career including Drop Dead Gorgeous, An American Vampire Story and Nevada Smith.
Born in 1928 in Walla Walla, Washington, West began his acting career in Hawaii in the 1950s.
He is survived by his wife, Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
