Michael Nyqvist, 56, has died after a battle with lung cancer. The Swedish actor, known for his roles in the Dragon Tattoo trilogy, John Wick and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, died Tuesday, according to a representative that spoke for the family.
“It is with deep sadness that I can confirm that our beloved Michael, one of Sweden’s most respected and accomplished actors, has passed away quietly surrounded by family after a year long battle with lung cancer,” Nyqvist’s representative said in a statement. “Michael’s joy and passion were infectious to those who knew and loved him. His charm and charisma were undeniable, and his love for the arts was felt by all who had the pleasure of working with him.”
Nyqvist learned his trade at the Malmö Theatre Academy, a leading theater in Sweden. He was best known for portraying Mikael Blomkvist in the original film adaptations of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.
Before his death, Nyqvist completed roles in the Gerard Butler thriller “Hunter Killer,” and a Colin Firth film called “Kursk.”
Nyqvist is survived by his wife, Catharina Ehrnrooth, and his two children, Ellen and Arthur.
