The news continues to be bleak for movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. Police in two countries have now confirmed that they are investigating allegations of sexual abuse against the producer.
On Thursday, the New York Police Department announced that it would launch an investigation into Weinstein stemming from an assault allegation in 2004.
Also Thursday, London’s Metropolitan Police are said to be assessing an allegation of sexual abuse made against the filmmaker. According to the Guardian: “The Met has been passed an allegation of sexual abuse by Merseyside police on Wednesday 11 October. The allegation will be assessed by officers from the child abuse and sexual offenses command.”
At this time, there has been no indication that the complaint is related to child abuse.
A string of women, ranging from actress Gwyneth Paltrow in the U.S. to French actress Florence Darel, have accused Weinstein of sexual harassment or assault. Three women have accused Weinstein of rape, including actresses Asia Argento and Lucia Evans, both of whom have come forward and claimed the producer raped them.
It has now been reported that the Department of Justice has instructed the FBI to open an investigation into Weinstein for the alleged sex crimes.
Weinstein has denied accusations of criminal sexual harassment, rape and sexual assault, with a spokesperson for Weinstein saying, “Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein … With respect to any women who have made allegations on the record, Mr. Weinstein believes that all of these relationships were consensual.”
With allegations mounting, Weinstein’s wife left him, prompting a brief and contrite statement from Weinstein himself: “I support her decision, I am in counseling and perhaps, when I am better, we can rebuild. Over the last week, there has been a lot of pain for my family that I take responsibility for.”
