HBO’s ‘Real Time’ host Bill Maher issued an apology on Saturday afternoon for using the ‘N-word’ on his show Friday evening while conducting an interview with Senator Sasse of Nebraska.  During the interview, Maher referred to himself as a “house n*ger.”

Maher said in a statement on Saturday: “Friday nights are always my worst night of sleep because I’m up reflecting on the things I should or shouldn’t have said on my live show. Last night was a particularly long night as I regret the word I used in the banter of a live moment. The word was offensive and I regret saying it and am very sorry.”

Maher is scheduled to do a comedy show at Indianapolis’ Murat Theater on Sunday.

Despite the apology, HBO remains under pressure to fire Maher.  The network issued a statement Saturday condemning Maher’s use of the N-word, calling it “completely inexcusable and tasteless,” but HBO did not indicate any fines or punishment being placed on the host. Maher’s apology came about two hours after HBO’s statement.
