Former NFL San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is alleging that several NFL teams participated in “calculated coordination” with President Donald J. Trump to blackball him from finding a spot on a team after he became a free-agent. League lawyers are now fielding a number of discovery requests including depositions involving NFL owners, teams or coaches.

Kaepernick is demanding that the NFL league owners turn over all cell phone records and emails in relation to himself.

Kaepernick became the center of controversy last year when he began kneeling during the national anthem ahead of football games. His protest was against racial injustice and police profiling, but it drew harsh criticism from many fans.

While fans booed him and the NFL struggled to decide on a course of action, Kaepernick’s on-field performance was not stellar. In fact, in December 2016, Kaepernick was benched after setting an undesirable NFL record.

Battling the Chicago Bears, the 49ers went away with a 26-6 loss while Kaepernick became the first quarterback in the history of the league to be sacked five times and throw for fewer than five yards in a game.

Yet, according to the now teamless quarterback, several owners and coaches were working against his efforts to find a new team after he opted out of his contract with the 49ers. Those affected by requests for depositions or records in relation to the allegations, according to ESPN and Yahoo Sports, include:

  • Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones
  • Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft
  • Texans’ owner Bob McNair
  • Seahawks coach Pete Carroll
  • 49ers owner Jed York
  • Giants owners John Mara and Steve Tisch

Jones, Kraft and McNair will be deposed and asked to turn over all cellphone records and emails in relation to Kaepernick’s accusation, ESPN.com reported.

Yahoo reports: “An NFL source familiar with discovery requests made this week told Yahoo Sports that “agitation” over the Kaepernick grievance is already building within the league’s legal department, which is building a defense hand-in-hand with heavy-hitting international law firm Covington & Burling.”
